Claude chat answered you inside a conversation. Claude Cowork took an outcome and worked across your files and apps until the job was done. That was the difference until September 16, 2026, when Anthropic merged Cowork and chat into one Claude (opens in a new tab). On Pro and Max there's no longer a mode to pick: you ask, and Claude decides whether you need a quick answer or a longer piece of work. The difference still matters, though. It's now about what kind of request you make, not which tab you open.

TL;DR
- Before: chat for questions and drafts; Cowork (a separate tab in the desktop app) for multi-step tasks on your files and apps.
- Now, on Pro and Max: one Claude does both, on web, desktop, and mobile. Your old chats, Cowork tasks, projects, connectors, and skills all carried over.
- Team and Free are getting the merged version "soon." Enterprise admins get at least 30 days' notice. Until then, the old split still applies to you.
- What's still different: a quick answer happens in the conversation; a task keeps running in the cloud, can run on a schedule, and can work with files on your computer if the desktop app is open.

Which version do you have?
Why Anthropic merged them
Anthropic's explanation is simple: people found it frustrating to decide where a task belonged, and work started in one place didn't carry over to the other. You'd begin brainstorming in chat, realize you wanted Claude to build the actual spreadsheet, and have to start again in Cowork.
So now Claude figures out what the task needs. A quick question gets a quick answer. A request like "write the weekly report, flag anything that slipped, and make five slides for leadership" becomes a task that Claude works through, producing the document and slides in the same conversation.
What's still different: answers vs. tasks
The two modes are gone, but the two kinds of work aren't. Here's how they behave in the merged Claude:

Gross margin is revenue minus the direct cost of what you sold. Net margin is what's left after every expense, including rent, payroll, and taxes.

How to use the merged Claude well
Ask for the outcome, not the steps. "Organize my contracts folder and list the ones expiring this quarter" works better than walking Claude through each step. That was true of Cowork, and it's true now.
Keep the desktop app open for local work. Tasks run in the cloud, but Claude can only reach files on your computer, your browser, and computer use while the desktop app is open.
Pick how independent Claude should be. A setting controls whether Claude checks with you before acting:
- Manual (the default): Claude asks for approval before taking actions.
- Auto: Claude works without stopping to ask, after running automated safety checks first.
Keep it on Manual for anything high-stakes, like sending messages or changing important files.
Schedule the repetitive stuff. Ask Claude to do something "every Monday at 9" and it starts on its own, even if your computer is off (as long as the task doesn't need your local files).
Connect your tools. Tasks get much more useful when Claude can reach your email, calendar, and files. See Claude connectors for what each one can do.
What's missing from the merged version (for now)
Anthropic lists a few things the new experience doesn't do yet:
- The GitHub integration isn't available.
- You can't branch a conversation.
- Incognito chats use the previous experience, without file creation or code execution.
- Search doesn't include older Cowork tasks.
- Dispatch (sending tasks from your phone to your desktop) isn't available to new users.

If you're still on the old version
On Team, Enterprise, or Free, you may still see chat and Cowork separately. The old rule of thumb still works:
- Use chat for a single question, a draft, brainstorming, or anything where you want to steer every step.
- Use Cowork (in the Claude desktop app) when the job is several steps, touches real files, spans several apps, or repeats every week.
When the merge reaches your plan, your chats and Cowork tasks will carry over and show up together in one Recents list.
What about Claude Code?
If you write software, Claude Code is still its own tool for coding in your terminal, editor, or the desktop app. The simple split now: Claude for everyday knowledge work (questions, documents, files, business tasks) and Claude Code for software development. What to verify, whichever version you have
- It can be confidently wrong. A task that misreads a document applies that mistake to your files. Review anything factual before it reaches a client.
- It doesn't know your business until you tell it. Generic output usually means missing context.
- Check the numbers. Treat figures as a draft to verify against your real systems.
- Review before it acts. That's what Manual mode is for.

When should I ask Claude for a task instead of an answer?
When the job has several steps, needs to read or save real files, spans more than one app, or repeats regularly. For a single question or a quick draft, just ask. In the merged Claude you don't pick a mode; you just describe what you want.
Does the merged Claude still need the desktop app?
Only for local work. Tasks run in the cloud and keep going when your laptop is closed, and you can use Claude on the web and mobile. But reading or saving files on your computer, using your browser, and computer use only work while the Claude desktop app is open.
Do I need a separate subscription for Claude Cowork?
No. The task abilities that used to be called Cowork come with every paid plan (Pro, Max, Team, Enterprise). They aren't on the Free plan yet.
