Claude connects to Outlook through the Microsoft 365 connector. It's available on every Claude plan, including Free, but it only works with a work or school Microsoft account, and a Microsoft administrator has to approve it for your organization first. Once connected, Claude can search and summarize your Outlook email and calendar. If your admins turn on write actions, it can also send mail, manage drafts, and schedule meetings. This guide covers what you need before you start, how to set it up, what it can and can't do, and how to fix it when it won't connect.

TL;DR
- Outlook is part of the Microsoft 365 connector, which also covers SharePoint, OneDrive, and Teams. There's no separate "Outlook" connector.
- Personal accounts don't work. Outlook.com, Hotmail, and Live addresses aren't supported. You need a work or school account on Microsoft Entra.
- An admin has to approve it. A Microsoft Entra Global Administrator grants consent for your organization, even if you're on Free, Pro, or Max.
- Reading works out of the box. Writing doesn't. Sending mail, managing drafts, and changing your calendar only work if your organization turns on write actions.
- Claude can't send, forward, or draft emails with attachments, and email it sends carries a header marking it as sent by an AI agent.
Before you start: the two requirements
Most "it won't connect" problems come from one of these.
1. A work or school Microsoft account. The connector only works with accounts on a Microsoft Entra tenant, which is what companies, schools, and most Microsoft 365 business plans use. If your email ends in @outlook.com, @hotmail.com, or @live.com, it won't work.
2. Your Microsoft admin's approval. A Microsoft Entra Global Administrator has to grant consent for the connector once, for the whole organization. If you run a small business and set up Microsoft 365 yourself, that admin is probably you. Otherwise, ask IT.
On Team and Enterprise Claude plans there's one more step: a Claude Owner or Primary Owner adds the connector for the organization under Organization settings → Connectors, then everyone connects their own account.

How to connect Claude to Outlook
- In Claude, go to Customize → Connectors.
- Find Microsoft 365 and select Connect.
- Sign in with your work or school Microsoft account and approve the access.
- When it works, the button changes to Disconnect.
- In a conversation, select + → Connectors and turn Microsoft 365 on.
Everything uses your existing Microsoft 365 permissions. Claude can only read or change what your own account already can.

Are write actions on for you? If your organization was using the connector before write actions launched, they're off by default. Teams messaging tools are blocked by default for everyone until an admin allows them. If Claude says it can read your mail but can't send, this is why.
Real Outlook workflows to try
Here's what a thread summary looks like:
Summarize the email thread about the Henderson renewal. What was decided, what's still open, and what do I owe?
Decided: Henderson agreed to a 12-month renewal at the current rate (Maria's email, Oct 2).
Still open: whether the onboarding fee is waived. Their procurement team asked twice and hasn't had an answer.
You owe: a reply on the onboarding fee, and the updated contract, which Maria asked for by Friday.

- Meeting prep: "Give me a one-page brief for my 2pm, using recent emails with the attendees and the files in the project's SharePoint folder."
- Inbox catch-up: "What came in from clients since Monday that still needs a reply?"
- Scheduling (write actions on): "Find 30 minutes next week that works for me and Priya, and create the meeting."
- Draft a reply (write actions on): "Draft a reply agreeing to the scope but moving the deadline to Friday. Save it as a draft; don't send."
The safe pattern: have Claude save drafts, then read and send them yourself. Claude's Manual approval setting also makes it ask before taking actions.
What the Outlook connector can't do
- No attachments on anything it sends. Sending, forwarding, and drafting all reject messages with attachments. If the reply needs a file attached, add it yourself in Outlook.
- Sent email is labeled. Every email Claude sends includes a header identifying it as agent-initiated. Calendar changes, file edits, and Teams messages aren't tagged this way.
- No personal accounts. Outlook.com, Hotmail, and Live aren't supported.
- Read-only until your organization says otherwise. Write actions need admin approval.
- Claude can still be wrong. Access to your real mailbox doesn't guarantee a correct reading. Review summaries and drafts before acting on them.
Claude for Outlook (the add-in) vs. the connector
These are two different things with similar names:
- The Microsoft 365 connector (this guide) brings your Outlook data into Claude, so you work in claude.ai or the Claude apps.
- Claude for Outlook (opens in a new tab) is an add-in that puts Claude inside Outlook itself, on the web, Windows, and Mac. It's in beta on Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise, and it shares context with Claude for Excel, PowerPoint, and Word, so you can, for example, pull numbers from an email straight into an open Excel model. It also needs a one-time approval from a Microsoft Global Administrator.
If you live in Outlook all day, the add-in may suit you better. If you want Claude to combine your email with other tools and files, use the connector.

Also check that your Microsoft 365 license is active and that your organization allows third-party apps. Trying a different browser, or clearing cookies, fixes some sign-in loops.
