Can ChatGPT Edit Videos? What Works in 2026 (and What Doesn't)

Can ChatGPT edit videos? Not alone in chat, but yes through apps like Adobe, Descript and ChatCut. What works, what doesn't, plus copy-paste editing prompts.

Can ChatGPT edit videos? Not by itself in the regular chat. ChatGPT has no timeline editor, and it can't watch the footage you upload. But as of October 2026, it can edit video through apps and plugins that connect to it: Adobe for ChatGPT (Premiere and Express), the Descript app, and the ChatCut plugin in the new ChatGPT desktop app. On top of that, it's a very good editing assistant for scripts, hooks, cut lists and captions. Many older articles still say "it can't." That was true in 2025. It isn't the whole story anymore.

TL;DR

  • Plain ChatGPT chat: no real video editing. It can't see or hear your video. Give it a transcript and screenshots instead.
  • Apps that do edit: Adobe for ChatGPT (type @Adobe) handles quick cuts, highlight reels and resizing for Shorts and Reels. The Descript app needs ChatGPT Plus or higher. The ChatCut plugin runs in the ChatGPT desktop app on Mac and Windows.
  • Best everyday use: let ChatGPT plan the edit (hooks, tighter script, cut list, captions) and do the cutting in an editor like Instagram Edits, CapCut, Premiere or Descript.
  • Shortcut: our free AI video editing prompt builder writes these prompts for you.

What ChatGPT can do on its own

Without any apps connected, ChatGPT is a planning and writing partner for video, not an editor. Here's where it's strong:

  • Scripts and hooks. Rewrite your opening line five ways, tighten a rambling script, or turn a blog post into a 45-second talking-head script.
  • Cut lists from transcripts. Paste a transcript with timestamps, and ChatGPT can tell you which sections to keep, which to cut, and what order works best. You then make those cuts in your editor.
  • B-roll and on-screen text. It can suggest b-roll shots for each line and write short on-screen captions.
  • Titles, descriptions and hashtags. Fast, and easy to test a few versions.

Can ChatGPT trim a video file?

Sometimes. ChatGPT accepts file uploads (up to 512MB per file), and some people have gotten simple trims to work through its data analysis tool, which can run code on a file. This is not an official feature. OpenAI doesn't list video as a supported upload type, so results vary and it may fail. Treat it as a bonus, not a workflow.

Can ChatGPT watch a video?

No. ChatGPT can't natively watch a video file or a YouTube link. With a link, the best it can do is read whatever text is on the page. The workaround is simple:

  1. Get a transcript (most editors and YouTube can export one).
  2. Take a few screenshots of key moments.
  3. Paste the transcript and upload the screenshots, then ask for feedback or a cut list.

Apps that let ChatGPT edit video

This is where the "yes" comes from. These connect to ChatGPT and do the actual editing.

Adobe for ChatGPT (Premiere and Express)

Adobe launched Adobe for ChatGPT in August 2026. You call it by typing @Adobe in a chat. It can make quick cuts and highlight reels with Premiere and Express, resize video for Shorts and Reels, and create animated designs. Some features need a paid Adobe plan. Details are on Adobe's Adobe for ChatGPT page.

Good for: turning a long video into short clips, and resizing one video for several platforms.

The Descript app

Descript has an official app inside ChatGPT. Descript edits video by editing the transcript, so it's a natural fit for a chat tool. The ChatGPT app needs ChatGPT Plus or higher, and it uses your Descript media minutes and AI credits. If you're on the Free plan, see our guide to the ChatGPT Plus free trial for what's actually available.

Good for: podcasts, interviews and talking-head videos where most edits are "cut this part out."

ChatCut (desktop app plugin)

ChatCut is a plugin for the ChatGPT desktop app on Mac and Windows. It doesn't work on the web or mobile. It runs in the Work and Codex tabs. According to the vendor, it can generate clips, make timeline edits, add captions and voiceover, create motion graphics, clean up audio, and export XML for other editors.

ChatCut uses credit plans. The vendor lists $25/month for 100 credits, $45 for 200, $88 for 400, and $160 for 800, and says the plugin installs on every ChatGPT plan, including Free. These are the vendor's claims as of October 2026, so check the ChatCut plugin page for current pricing.

Good for: people who want to stay in ChatGPT for the whole edit.

DaVinci Resolve (for technical users)

There's a community-built DaVinci Resolve MCP project (samuelgursky/davinci-resolve-mcp on GitHub) that lets an AI assistant control Resolve. It isn't official, it needs the paid Resolve Studio version, and you have to set up a custom MCP connection yourself. Worth a look if you're comfortable with technical setup. Skip it if you're not.

What about Canva and CapCut?

Canva's ChatGPT app is design-first. For video, it gives you templates you finish inside Canva. As of October 2026 we couldn't confirm an official CapCut app inside ChatGPT, so CapCut stays a separate tool you use alongside it (more on that below).

Where these plugins live: the new ChatGPT desktop app

A quick bit of context, because it explains why some features only show up on desktop. On July 9, 2026, OpenAI merged Codex into a new ChatGPT desktop app with three modes: Chat, Work and Codex. The older app became "ChatGPT Classic." All three modes are on every plan, Free included (OpenAI's announcement (opens in a new tab)).

Plugins like ChatCut run in the Work and Codex modes of that desktop app. So if you can't find a video plugin in the browser, that's usually why.

Can you use ChatGPT to edit Reels?

Yes, as a planner and through Adobe's app. ChatGPT itself won't export a finished Reel from the regular chat. Here are three setups that work:

  1. Plan in ChatGPT, cut in Instagram Edits. Meta's Edits app is free, has no watermark, has a multi-track timeline, exports in 4K and publishes straight to Reels. Have ChatGPT write the hook, cut list and on-screen text, then build it in Edits.
  2. Plan in ChatGPT, cut in CapCut. CapCut has auto captions and AutoCut, which turns a long video into highlight clips. ChatGPT can write the step-by-step for you (there's a prompt for that below).
  3. Resize with Adobe for ChatGPT. If you already have a horizontal video, @Adobe can resize it for Reels and Shorts.

The fastest route for most people: get the plan from ChatGPT, then spend ten minutes in Edits or CapCut doing the cuts. The free AI video editing prompt builder can generate a Reels-specific prompt in a few clicks.

Copy-paste ChatGPT prompts for video editing

Swap in your own details where you see brackets.

1. Rewrite your hook

Here is the first 15 seconds of my video script: [paste]. My audience is [who]. Write 5 alternative hooks under 12 words each. Make each one use a different angle: a question, a bold claim, a surprising number, a mistake to avoid, and a quick story. Tell me which you'd pick and why.

2. Tighten a script

Tighten this script for a [60-second] video. Cut filler, repeated points and long setups. Keep my voice and any key facts. Show the new version, then list what you removed. Script: [paste]

3. Build a cut list from a timestamped transcript

Below is a timestamped transcript of a [length] video. I want a [target length] version for [platform]. Make a table with columns: Start, End, Keep or Cut, Reason. Keep the strongest moments, cut tangents and repeats, and suggest a final order if it should change. Transcript: [paste]

4. B-roll shot list

For each line of this script, suggest one b-roll shot I could film on my phone or find in stock footage. Put it in a table: Line, B-roll idea, Where to get it. Script: [paste]

5. Captions and on-screen text

Turn this transcript into on-screen text for a vertical video. Max 6 words per card. Highlight one key word per card in caps. Keep the timing notes from the transcript. Transcript: [paste]

6. Reels caption and hashtags

Write 3 Instagram Reels captions for this video: [one-line summary]. Each under 150 characters with a clear call to action. Then give me up to 5 specific hashtags (Instagram now allows five per post): mostly niche and topic tags, not broad ones. My niche is [niche].

7. CapCut step-by-step

I'm editing a [length] talking-head video into a [target length] Reel in CapCut on my phone. Using this cut list: [paste], give me numbered steps: where to split, what to delete, how to add auto captions, and how to export for Reels. Assume I'm a beginner.

8. Feedback from screenshots

I've attached screenshots from my video plus the transcript. Act as a short-form video editor. Tell me where viewers will likely drop off, what to cut, and whether the framing and text are easy to read on a phone. Transcript: [paste]

ChatGPT vs Claude for video editing

Both are strong editing assistants. Neither is a full video editor in plain chat. Here's how they compare as of October 2026:

ChatGPTClaude
Watch video in chatNo (use transcript and screenshots)No (use transcript and screenshots)
Editing appsAdobe for ChatGPT, Descript app, ChatCut pluginDescript and Adobe connectors

A note on Sora: OpenAI shut down the Sora app and web in April 2026 and the Sora API in September 2026 (OpenAI help article (opens in a new tab)), so ChatGPT no longer has its own video generation model.

Where ChatGPT falls short (and what to verify)

  • It can't see your footage. Any feedback it gives on visuals is based on what you describe or the screenshots you share.
  • Timestamps can drift. Double-check every cut point from a cut list against the actual video before you cut.
  • Plugin features and prices change. ChatCut's pricing and feature list are vendor claims. Adobe and Descript depend on your plan with them. Check each vendor's page before you pay.
  • Some apps need a paid plan. The Descript app needs ChatGPT Plus or higher, and some Adobe features need a paid Adobe plan.
  • Desktop-only plugins. ChatCut runs in the desktop app, not the browser or phone.
  • Final review is on you. Watch the whole export before posting, especially captions and anything with names or numbers.

Frequently asked questions

Can ChatGPT edit videos for free?

Partly. The free plan can plan edits, write scripts, and make cut lists from a transcript. The new desktop app is free, and ChatCut says its plugin installs on every plan including Free, but it charges for credits. The Descript app needs ChatGPT Plus or higher, and some Adobe features need a paid Adobe plan.

Can ChatGPT watch a video?

No. ChatGPT can't natively watch a video file or a YouTube link. At best it reads the text on a page. Give it a transcript plus a few screenshots, and it can give useful feedback and a cut list.

Can ChatGPT edit Instagram Reels?

Not directly in the regular chat. Use ChatGPT to write the hook, cut list, on-screen text and caption, then cut the Reel in Instagram Edits or CapCut. Adobe for ChatGPT can also resize existing videos for Reels.

What is the best ChatGPT plugin for video editing?

It depends on the job. Adobe for ChatGPT is good for quick cuts, highlight reels and resizing. The Descript app suits podcasts and talking-head videos and needs ChatGPT Plus or higher. ChatCut runs inside the desktop app for full timeline edits and uses paid credits.

Can ChatGPT make videos?

Not on its own anymore. OpenAI discontinued Sora in 2026, so ChatGPT has no built-in video generation model. It can still script videos and work with third-party apps. See our full guide on whether ChatGPT can make videos.
