Can Claude Edit Videos? What It Can (and Can't) Do in 2026

Can Claude edit videos? Not like a timeline editor, but it can make animated videos, drive tools like Descript and Premiere, and plan every cut. Here's how.

Claude essentials

On this page

Claude can't edit your raw footage the way CapCut or Premiere does. It has no timeline editor and no video generation model of its own. But it can still make and edit videos in four practical ways: it builds animated videos with Claude Motion (Team and Enterprise plans), it drives real video tools like Descript, Adobe Premiere and HyperFrames through connectors, it renders videos from code with Claude Code plus Remotion or HyperFrames, and it works as a very good editing assistant that writes your hooks, cut lists, captions and shot lists. This guide covers each one, what it costs, and where it falls short, as of October 2026.

TL;DR

QuestionShort answer
Can Claude edit videos? Not directly. It edits through connected tools (Descript, Premiere) or by writing code that renders video.
Can Claude make videos?Yes. Claude Motion turns a prompt into an animated MP4 on Team and Enterprise plans.
Does Claude do video generation? No. There's no generative video model, so no realistic footage or people.
Can Claude watch a video? Not natively. Give it a transcript plus screenshots instead.
Best free option?Use Claude as your editing assistant and cut in a free editor.

If you want the prompts ready to go, the free AI video editing prompt builder writes them for your platform, video type and editing tool.

Can Claude watch or understand a video?

Not on its own. The claude.ai upload docs list documents and images (JPEG, PNG, GIF, WebP), with no video or audio formats. So you can't drop an MP4 into a chat and ask Claude to review it. There's also no official feature for watching a YouTube link. At best, Claude reads the text on the page or a transcript.

The workaround is simple and works well:

  1. Get a transcript. Most editors (Descript, CapCut, Premiere) and YouTube itself can export one. Timestamps help a lot.
  2. Grab a few screenshots of key moments (your opening frame, a slide, the thumbnail).
  3. Upload both and ask Claude what you need: a cut list, a tighter script, chapter markers, captions.

Uploads are limited to 500MB per file and 20 files per chat, which is plenty for transcripts and stills.

For Claude Code users: a community skill called claude-video adds a /watch command. (Claude Code is Anthropic's tool that lets Claude work with files and run commands on your computer.) The skill downloads a video, pulls out frames and transcribes the audio with Whisper, then lets Claude analyze it. It analyzes video; it doesn't edit it. Coverage drops off for videos longer than about 10 minutes. You can find it on GitHub (bradautomates/claude-video) (opens in a new tab) and install it in Claude Code with:

/plugin marketplace add bradautomates/claude-video
/plugin install watch@claude-video

If you're new to skills, what are Claude agent skills explains how they work.

Way 1: Make videos with Claude Motion

Claude Motion is the closest thing to a built-in Claude video maker. Anthropic announced it in beta on October 8, 2026, alongside Claude Dashboards.

What it does: Claude writes code that animates text, charts, shapes and images, then you export the result as an MP4. Think animated stat reveals, explainer sequences, product feature callouts and branded title cards. Because it's code, not a generative model, it won't produce realistic footage or people.

Who has it: Team and Enterprise plans only, as of October 2026. It's not on Free, Pro or Max. It's on by default for Team; Enterprise owners turn it on in Organization settings, under Artifacts.

How to start:

  • Type /motion in a chat, or
  • Choose Output, then Motion in the composer, or
  • Pick the Motion template in the Artifacts tab.

Then describe what you want ("a 15-second animated intro that shows our three service tiers with our brand colors"), adjust it through chat or the editor, and export as MP4. Motions are private by default and can be shared.

Limits to know: Motion counts against your plan's usage limits, and longer animations use more. Anthropic hasn't published the maximum length, resolution or aspect ratios. Anthropic also names partner tools you can hand work off to: Adobe, Descript, HeyGen, Higgsfield, invideo, Luma AI and Runway, with Canva and Captions listed as coming soon.

Way 2: Edit video through Claude connectors

Connectors let Claude take actions inside other apps. For video, this is how Claude actually edits real footage: it tells a real video tool what to do. (The Claude connectors guide covers how connectors work in general.)

Official connectors in the Claude directory:

Custom connectors for generated footage: if you want AI-generated clips (the kind of thing Claude can't make itself), some video platforms offer connectors you add by URL:

  • Higgsfield gives Claude access to generative video models such as Veo, Kling and Seedance. It's a custom connector, not a directory listing, and it needs a paid Higgsfield subscription and uses credits.
  • Picsart generates images, video and audio, but its connector needs a command-line tool installed, so it's more of a developer setup.

The connector itself doesn't add the cost; each vendor's own plan and credits apply. Check the vendor's site for current pricing before you commit.

A note on Canva: the Claude Canva connector creates and edits designs like decks and social graphics. Don't count on it for video editing.

Way 3: Render videos with Claude Code + Remotion or HyperFrames

This is the "Claude Code video editing" route people talk about online. Instead of editing footage, Claude writes a small video project as code, and a free rendering tool turns it into an MP4. You describe the video in plain English; Claude does the building.

  • Remotion builds videos with React. Its official skill teaches Claude Code the right way to use it (npx skills add remotion-dev/skills). Remotion is free for individuals, non-profits and companies with up to 3 employees. Bigger companies need a license, starting at $25 per month per seat for the Creator plan. See Remotion's AI skills docs (opens in a new tab) and license page (opens in a new tab).
  • HyperFrames, made by HeyGen, renders HTML and animation code to MP4. It's open source (Apache 2.0) with no render or seat fees. It needs Node 22 or newer and FFmpeg on your computer. See HyperFrames on GitHub (opens in a new tab).

Claude Code can also run FFmpeg (a free command-line video tool) directly for simple jobs like trimming, joining clips, resizing for vertical video or burning in captions. There's no official "FFmpeg skill"; you just ask.

For the full walkthrough, written for non-developers, read how to make videos with Claude Code and Remotion.

Use Claude as your video editing assistant

For most creators and business owners, this is where Claude saves the most time. You still cut the video in your editor, but Claude does the thinking: what to keep, what to say in the first two seconds, where the b-roll goes, and what the caption says. All of this works on the free plan.

Copy any prompt below, fill in the brackets, and paste in your transcript where asked. Or let the free AI video editing prompt builder assemble them for your exact setup.

1. Write scroll-stopping hooks

I'm making a [30-second Instagram Reel] about [topic] for [audience].
Write 10 hook lines for the first 2 seconds. Mix styles: a bold claim,
a question, a mistake people make, a surprising number, and a "here's
what happened" story opener. Keep each under 12 words. Mark your top 3
and explain why in one line each.

2. Tighten a script to a target length

Here is my script/transcript: [paste].
Cut it to fit [45 seconds] of speaking at a natural pace (about 2.5
words per second). Keep the hook and the main point. Remove repetition,
filler and side tangents. Show the new version, then list what you cut
and why.

3. Build a cut list from a transcript

Here is my transcript with timestamps: [paste].
Make a cut list as a table with columns: Start, End, What's said,
Action (Cut / Keep / Tighten), Reason. Flag filler words, dead air,
false starts, retakes and anything that repeats an earlier point.
At the end, estimate the new total length.

4. Plan a b-roll shot list

Here is my script: [paste]. My video is a [talking head] for
[audience]. Suggest b-roll for each section as a table: Timestamp or
line, Shot description, Where to get it (film it myself / stock /
screen recording), Duration. Keep it realistic for one person with a
phone.

5. Write captions and on-screen text

Turn this transcript into on-screen captions for a vertical video:
[paste]. Break it into short chunks of 3 to 6 words that match natural
pauses. Then suggest 4 to 6 bold text overlays for the key moments,
each under 7 words, with the timestamp where it should appear.

6. Write the title, caption and hashtags

Write a post caption for this Reel: [one-line summary or transcript].
Give me: 3 title/cover text options under 6 words, a caption of 2 to 4
short lines that ends with a question to drive comments, and up to 5
specific hashtags (niche and topic tags, not broad ones). No emojis.

Instagram now caps hashtags at five per post or Reel, so ask for five at most.

7. Get step-by-step CapCut instructions

I edit in CapCut on my phone and I'm a beginner. Based on this cut list:
[paste], give me numbered step-by-step instructions to: trim the clips,
add auto captions, place my text overlays at the right times, add a
background music track at low volume, and export for Instagram Reels.
Tell me which menu each step is in.

8. Repurpose one long video into clips

Here is the transcript of my [20-minute] video: [paste].
Find the 5 strongest moments that work as standalone 30 to 60 second
clips. For each, give: start and end timestamps, a hook to open with,
why it works on its own, and a suggested on-screen title.

One tip: Claude can't see timing in your edit, so ask for estimates and check them against your timeline.

Can Claude edit Instagram Reels?

Not inside Instagram, but it can plan the whole Reel so the editing goes fast. The simple workflow:

  1. Plan in Claude. Use the prompts above for the hook, tightened script, shot list and caption.
  2. Film on your phone using the shot list.
  3. Cut in a phone editor. Instagram Edits (Meta's free editor, no watermark, publishes straight to Reels) or CapCut (auto captions, plus AutoCut for turning long videos into highlight clips) both work. Ask Claude for step-by-step instructions for whichever you use.
  4. Post with the caption and hashtags Claude wrote.

The free AI video editing prompt builder writes all of these prompts at once when you pick Instagram Reels as your platform.

Where Claude falls short (and what to verify)

  • No timeline editing in the chat app. Claude can't trim, cut or color-grade a clip you upload, because it can't take video uploads at all.
  • No generative video. Claude doesn't make realistic footage, people or scenes. For that you need a separate generator, connected or used on its own.
  • Motion is limited to Team and Enterprise and is still in beta. Length, resolution and aspect ratio limits aren't published, so test before you plan a campaign around it.
  • Timestamps from transcripts are estimates. Always check a cut list against your actual timeline.
  • Connector costs live with the vendor. Descript, Adobe and Higgsfield bill through their own plans and credits.
  • Remotion licensing changes with company size. If your company has more than 3 employees, budget for a license.
  • Features move fast. Connectors and plans change often. Treat each connector's own page as the source of truth.

Frequently asked questions

Can Claude make videos for free?

Partly. On the free plan, Claude can write your scripts, hooks, cut lists and captions, and you edit in a free tool like Instagram Edits. Claude Motion, the built-in video maker, needs a Team or Enterprise plan. HyperFrames is open source with no render fees, and Remotion is free for individuals and companies with up to 3 employees, but both are used through Claude Code.

Can Claude watch YouTube videos?

Not natively. Claude has no official feature for watching a YouTube link. At best it reads the page text or a transcript. Paste in the video's transcript and a few screenshots instead, or use the community claude-video /watch skill in Claude Code, which pulls frames and transcribes the audio.

Can Claude read an MP4 file?

No. The claude.ai upload docs list documents and images but no video or audio formats, so you can't upload an MP4. Export a transcript and a few screenshots from your editor and upload those instead.

Does Claude have a video generator like Sora?

No. Claude has no generative video model, so it can't create realistic footage or people. Claude Motion makes animated videos by writing code that moves text, charts, shapes and images. For generated footage, you can connect a third-party generator such as Higgsfield as a custom connector, which needs that vendor's paid plan. OpenAI also discontinued Sora in 2026.

Is Claude or ChatGPT better for video editing?

Neither is a full video editor. Both are strong editing assistants for scripts, hooks, cut lists and captions, and both connect to tools like Descript and Adobe. Claude stands out with Claude Motion for animated videos on Team and Enterprise plans, and with Claude Code for code-rendered video. ChatGPT has its own app and plugin options.
