Getting Started

Everything you need to start the Grant Writing for Nonprofits course in about 5 minutes.

Requirements

Before you begin, make sure you have:

  1. An AI subscription — Claude Pro, ChatGPT Plus, or equivalent
  2. The course materials — Free download from GitHub
  3. Your AI tool of choice — Claude Desktop, ChatGPT, Cowork, Manus, or any AI that can read files

This course works on all major AI platforms. Use whichever tool you prefer.

Installation

Download the Course Materials

Go to the GitHub repository and download the course folder:

Option A: Download ZIP (Recommended)

Click the download link to get the course ZIP, then extract it to your computer.

Option B: Git Clone

git clone <repository-url>

Open Your AI Tool

Launch Claude, ChatGPT, Cowork, Manus, or your preferred AI platform.

Point It at the Course Folder

  • Claude Desktop / Cowork: Select the course folder when prompted
  • ChatGPT: Upload the course folder or individual lesson files
  • Other tools: Open or upload the course files so your AI can access them

Start Learning

Say "start lesson 1.1" and your AI tool will introduce the course format and help you get oriented with the grant-writing landscape.

What to Bring

This course works best when you have a real grant opportunity in mind. But if you don't have one yet, no problem — the course includes a practice RFP you can use throughout.

If you have a real RFP:

  • Have the RFP document accessible (PDF or text)
  • Know basic facts about your organization (mission, programs, budget size)
  • Have any existing program data or past grant narratives handy

If you're practicing:

  • The course includes everything you need — just follow along

Tips for Success

Take your time. The course is designed for 2-3 hours total, but there's no rush. Do it at your own pace.

  • Follow along actively - Don't just read; actually do the tasks your AI gives you
  • Use your real data - The more real your inputs, the more useful your outputs
  • Ask questions - If something's unclear, just ask your AI to explain
  • Take breaks - You can stop and resume anytime
  • Save your work - Your AI creates files as you go; keep them for future applications

Troubleshooting

AI can't see my files

Make sure you've selected or uploaded the correct folder. Ask your AI: "Can you see the course files?" If not, reselect or re-upload.

Lessons aren't working

Try saying the exact phrase: start lesson 1.1 — your AI is trained to recognize this format.

I'm stuck on a step

Just ask your AI! Say "I'm stuck" or "Can you help me with this?" The whole point is that your AI is your interactive writing partner.

Ready?

Head back to your AI tool and type:

start lesson 1.1

Let's write a winning grant application.
