1.4 Root Cause Analysis
Time: ~20 minutes
What You'll Learn
- The difference between symptoms and root causes
- A framework for tracing visible problems back to their source
- How to test whether you have found the real cause or just another symptom
- How to articulate the core problem clearly and convincingly
Key Concepts
In every messy situation, there are dozens of things that look like problems. Revenue is down. Employees are frustrated. Customers are complaining. Processes are broken. But most of these are symptoms, not causes.
Root Cause Analysis teaches you to:
- List the visible symptoms — Everything that people are pointing to as "the problem"
- Ask "why" repeatedly — Trace each symptom back to what is causing it
- Look for convergence — Multiple symptoms often trace back to the same root cause
- Test your hypothesis — Would fixing this one thing actually resolve the symptoms?
Why This Matters
If you fix a symptom instead of the cause, the problem comes back. Worse, you burn time, money, and credibility on a solution that does not work. Finding the root cause is the difference between a temporary patch and a real fix.
This is often the hardest lesson in the module — and the most valuable.
