What makes a good Instagram bio
- Say who you help and how. Someone landing on your profile should know in a second whether you’re for them. “Bookkeeping for small businesses” beats “Passionate about numbers.”
- Use the name field for a keyword. The name field (30 characters) shows up in Instagram search, so put a word people would type in it. “Maya | Denver Wedding Photographer” helps people find you; your bio then does the convincing.
- Give one clear call to action. Pick the one thing you want visitors to do next, like book, shop, or grab a guide, and point to your link. One ask is easier to act on than three.
- Add a bit of proof. Years in business, customers served, or a short result builds trust quickly. Keep it specific: “2,000+ cakes baked” reads better than “the best cakes in town.”
- Use line breaks. Short lines are easier to scan on a phone. Just remember each break uses one of your 150 characters.
- Update it for launches. Your bio isn’t permanent. Swap the call to action when you have a new product, a sale, a free guide, or an event, and change your first link to match.

Frequently asked questions
How many characters can an Instagram bio have?
Up to 150 characters. Spaces, punctuation, emojis and line breaks all count toward that limit, so a four-line bio spends three characters just on the breaks. The name field above your bio has its own 30-character limit, and so does your username.
How do I add line breaks to my Instagram bio?
Go to your profile, tap Edit profile, then tap Bio and press Return (or Enter) where you want a new line. If you write your bio somewhere else first, like this tool or your notes app, copy it with the line breaks in and paste it into the Bio field. Each break counts as one character. If a break disappears after you save, add it again directly in the Instagram app.
What should a business put in its Instagram bio?
Say what you do and who it’s for in the first line, add one piece of proof (years in business, customers served, a review score), and finish with a single call to action that points to your link, like “Book below” or “Shop the collection below.” Local businesses should add their town or neighborhood and opening hours. Put a searchable keyword in the name field, such as “Austin Bakery,” because the name field shows up in Instagram search.
Can I put links in my Instagram bio?
Yes. Instagram lets you add up to 5 links in the Links section of Edit profile. Only the first one shows on your profile, with “and X others” next to it, so put your most important link first. Web addresses typed into the bio text itself won’t be clickable, so use the Links section instead.
Can Claude or ChatGPT write my Instagram bio?
Yes, and they’re good at it if you tell them what you do, who it’s for, your tone, and the 150-character limit. They don’t always count characters exactly, so check the length before you paste. The prompt on this page includes those details for you and also asks for name-field keyword ideas. This page itself doesn’t use AI: the bios above are built from fixed templates in your browser.
