How to write a great TikTok caption
- Make the first line count. Only the start of a caption shows before “more.” Use it to add something the video doesn’t say: a question, the result, or why someone should watch to the end.
- Use search words naturally. Write the words people would type to find your video, like “meal prep for busy parents,” in a normal sentence.
- Give one call to action. Ask people to follow, comment, save or share, not all four. A question they can answer in a few words is the easiest way to get comments.
- Keep hashtags to 3 to 5 specific ones. Tags that describe the topic and the audience help the right viewers find you. Skip long lists of generic tags.
- Keep it short. Most strong captions are one or two lines plus hashtags. Save longer explanations for the video itself or a pinned comment.
- Match the caption to the hook. If the video opens with a question, the caption can hint at the answer. If it opens with a result, the caption can say how long it took.
Posting on Instagram too?
The same captions work for Reels with small changes. Instagram is gradually limiting posts and Reels to five hashtags, and captions there can be up to 2,200 characters. Frequently asked questions
How long can a TikTok caption be?
In the TikTok app, the caption limit is widely reported as 4,000 characters. If you post through a scheduling tool, TikTok’s posting system for those tools caps captions at 2,200 characters. Either way, only the start of the caption shows before viewers tap “more,” so the first line matters far more than the total length.
How many hashtags should I use on TikTok?
TikTok doesn’t publish an ideal number, so keep it simple: 3 to 5 specific hashtags that describe the video, like #MealPrep or #BusyParents. Generic tags like #fyp or #viral say nothing about what the video is, so they don’t help the right people find it.
Do TikTok captions help people find my video?
They can. People search on TikTok the way they search on Google, and the words in your caption, on-screen text and speech all describe what your video is about. Use the plain words someone would type, like “easy meal prep for busy parents,” in a natural sentence rather than a keyword list.
Should I use emojis in TikTok captions?
One or two can add tone or point to the call to action. More than that makes captions harder to read and pushes your words out of the visible first line. Switch emojis on or off in the tool to compare both.
Does this TikTok caption generator use AI?
No. The captions are built in your browser from fixed templates, so it’s instant and nothing you type is sent or saved. For more options in your own voice, copy the prompt on this page into Claude or ChatGPT.
