Data Literacy
Getting Started

Getting Started

Everything you need to start building data literacy in about 5 minutes.

Requirements

Before you begin, make sure you have:

  1. An AI subscription — Claude Pro, ChatGPT Plus, or equivalent
  2. The course materials — Free download
  3. Your AI tool of choice — Claude Desktop, ChatGPT, Cowork, Manus, or any AI that can read files

This course works on all major AI platforms. Use whichever tool you prefer.

Installation

Download the Course Materials

Download the course folder and extract it to your computer. It includes sample datasets, messy spreadsheets, example reports, and all lesson files.

Open Your AI Tool

Launch Claude, ChatGPT, Cowork, Manus, or your preferred AI platform.

Point It at the Course Folder

  • Claude Desktop / Cowork: Select the course folder when prompted
  • ChatGPT: Upload the course folder or individual lesson files
  • Other tools: Open or upload the course files so your AI can access them

Start Learning

Say "start lesson 1.1" and your AI tool will introduce you to the course format, learn about your role, and begin teaching you how to read data critically.

Course Structure

The course is organized into two modules you complete in order:

LessonTopicWhat You'll Learn
Module 1: Reading Data Without Fear
1.1IntroductionWhy data literacy matters and your data context
1.2Reading Charts RightCommon chart types and spotting misleading visualizations
1.3Understanding MetricsSeparating vanity metrics from meaningful numbers
1.4Spotting BS in DataCherry-picking, survivorship bias, correlation vs causation
1.5Module 1 Wrap-upReview of critical thinking skills
Module 2: AI as Your Data Analyst
2.1Messy Data, Clear AnswersAI reads spreadsheets and answers plain-English questions
2.2Building VisualizationsPicking the right chart and having AI create it
2.3The Explain This WorkflowHaving AI break down dense reports
2.4Data to NarrativeTurning raw numbers into summaries people want to read
2.5Your Reusable Data SetupBuilding a repeatable analysis process

Tips for Success

Take your time. The course is designed for 3-4 hours total (1.5-2 per module), but there's no rush. Do it at your own pace.

  • Follow along actively - Don't just read; actually work with the sample data your AI gives you
  • Bring your own data - The more you practice with real numbers from your job, the faster the skills stick
  • Ask questions - If something's unclear, just ask your AI to explain differently
  • Take breaks - You can stop and resume anytime

Troubleshooting

AI can't see my files

Make sure you've selected or uploaded the correct folder. Ask your AI: "Can you see the sample-data folder?" If not, reselect or re-upload.

Lessons aren't working

Try saying the exact phrase: start lesson 1.1 — your AI is trained to recognize this format.

I'm stuck on a step

Just ask your AI! Say "I'm stuck" or "Can you explain that differently?" The whole point is that your AI is your interactive tutor.

Ready?

Head back to your AI tool and type:

start lesson 1.1
