2.3 The Explain This Workflow
Time: ~20 minutes
What You'll Learn
- How to have AI break down a dense report into digestible sections
- Asking the right follow-up questions to go deeper on what matters
- Identifying the key findings vs supporting detail
- Building a workflow you can reuse on any report that lands on your desk
Key Concepts
We've all been there: a 40-page report lands in your inbox and you need to understand it by tomorrow's meeting. The old approach was to skim it and hope you caught the important parts.
The AI approach:
- Upload the report and ask for a section-by-section summary
- Identify what matters -- ask AI to highlight the key findings and flag anything surprising
- Go deeper selectively -- drill into the sections that are relevant to your role
- Extract the action items -- ask AI what decisions this data supports
This lesson walks you through this workflow on a sample report, then helps you practice the follow-up questions that separate surface-level summaries from genuinely useful breakdowns.
The Module 1 skills come in here too -- you'll evaluate whether the report's own conclusions are supported by its data, using the BS-detection framework from lesson 1.4.

- Report breakdown workflow (directly reusable on any document)
- Selective deep-diving (saves time on every report you read)
- Connecting AI summaries to critical evaluation (the core skill of this course)
